Maputuland - 'The Elephant Coast'

A staggering diversity of ecosystems in Maputuland mean that there are superb opportunities to see a wide variety of animals in their natural environment – if you are looking for a true ecological ‘wilderness’ experience then a visit here is highly recommended.

Private game reserves in the savanna, such as Thanda and Phinda feature the ‘Big Five’. The coastal areas of the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park and Sodwana Bay provide the unique aspects with their Mangrove swamps, dunes and unspoilt coral reefs. Five species of turtles can be found and the loggerhead and leatherback breed here, migrating thousands of miles before arriving between October and February.

The coral reefs off Sodwana Bay are teeming with tropical fish and the warm Indian Ocean waters allow for some of the world’s best snorkelling year-round. Rocktail Bay, Thanda and Phinda all fall within an endemic malaria area. Please consult your GP with regards to obtaining the correct medication.
