Gemaldegalerie

Berlin, Germany

The Gemaldegalerie is an art museum and a constituent of Museum Island, in Berlin’s old town. Built in 1830, the Gemaldegalerie collection was formed by a series of the Prussian government’s acquisitions beginning in 1815. It holds one of the world’s most extensive collections of European paintings from the 13th to 18th centuries, including masterpieces from Renaissance artists such as Botticelli, Titian, Rubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer and Viviani.

The museum has comprehensive collections of German and early Netherlandish and Italian paintings, followed by smaller collections of Spanish, French and British art. The main floor galleries are organised in chronological order, displaying over 850 artworks in 50 rooms.
