Syracuse

Overview

The Corinthians were the first settlers on the intriguing island of Ortigia which forms the main part of this ancient city. Syracuse Cathedral has original Greek columns dating from the 5th century, the Temple of Athena within its massive walls and a handsome Baroque façade; it ranks as one of the most remarkable buildings in Sicily and is worthy of a journey in its own right. The archaeological remains of the ancient Greek amphitheatre and caves of Neapolis, just two miles away from Ortigia, are some of the best kept on the island. Fly to Catania, price includes hire car.
