Gdańsk

Overview

Strategically located on the southern shore of the Baltic Sea, the history of Gdan´sk dates back over a thousand
years to its foundation in 980. However, it wasn’t until the ‘Solidarity’ union, lead by Lech Walesa, challenged the local Communist party in 1980 that the city’s name could claim a permanent place in the history books. A visit to the atmospheric Solidarity Museum is a fascinating experience that brings back vivid memories of the event. However, for many discerning travellers, the main reason for heading to this beautiful mediaeval city is to see the exquisite Gothic architecture and handsome Long Market square, as well as visiting the city’s many museums and churches and its extraordinary collection of precious amber treasures in The Gateway Museum.
