Castille

Overview

The geographical and spiritual heart of Spain, the historic kingdom of Castille is a landscape of open plains, windmills and pastures. The land of Cervantes' Don Quixote, this is authentic Spain, and you will discover charming sleepy villages and a number of fascinating ancient towns and cities.

Toledo

The city of Toledo is now one of the most important centres of European mediaeval history and has some outstanding architecture of the period which has been beautifully presented. This was the home of El Greco and much of his work is on display in the city’s museums and churches. We recommend a midweek stay when you are more likely to avoid the crowds and see the city at its most atmospheric. Toledo is thirty minutes by train from Madrid.

Avila

Eighty miles to the west of Madrid and a little over an hour by train, Avila is the country’s highest provincial capital and is dominated by its extraordinary city walls. They were built in the 12th century and extend for 2,500 metres around the old town and are punctuated by 90 fortified stone towers.

Segovia

Sixty miles from Madrid and less than thirty minutes by train, Segovia has a spectacular position on a rocky spur above the Rio Eresma and Rio Clamores. It is dominated by the fairy tale Alcazar, the imposing Gothic cathedral and the 800 metre long Roman aqueduct which is still in use today.

Salamanca

With its perfectly formed cityscape of ancient roofs and churches, Salamanca is one of the most beautiful destinations in Spain. Visit the Plaza Mayor; the heart of the city; the Patio de las Escuelas and both cathedrals. The older one is dwarfed by its Gothic counterpart and contains a wonderful 15th century retablo. The train journey from Madrid takes two hours 30 minutes.
