Botswana

Overview

The Okavango Delta is one of the world’s most spectacular and unusual wilderness areas. Every year, after the summer rains have fallen hundreds of miles away in the Angolan highlands, the delta floods and 15,000 square kilometres of arid grasslands and dry river beds are transformed into a mix of islands, winding waterways and lily covered lagoons. From June to October, the delta teems with wildlife which is best observed from native dugout canoes known as ‘mokoros’. Flights to the Okavango Delta are into Maun which is a two hour journey from Johannesburg. Light aircraft then take you on the short hop to the camps.

The north eastern part of Botswana is centered around the Chobe National Park, a vast landscape of open plains and Baobab trees and home to 45,000 elephants – the largest single concentration in Africa. Many lodges are located along the Chobe River and offer river safaris as well as game drives. There are several ways to enter the Chobe area. Kasane airport has light aircraft flights to Maun making it easily combinable with the Okavango Delta. Flights also go into Livingstone or Victoria Falls and the National Park is around one hour by road from the Falls.
