The Pink City was founded in the 18th century and has at its heart, the City Palace; other landmarks include the Jantar Mantar Observatory and the Hawa Mahal or Palace of the Winds. Outside Jaipur is the Amber Fort, the former capital which was largely abandoned when it became too small for its inhabitants. Many of the shops and houses were painted pink for the British royal visit in 1876 and locals still maintain the colour.
