Varanasi

Overview

Although just over an hour's flight from Delhi, Varanasi has a completely different atmosphere to the capital. It is a major pilgrimage site for the Hindu population who come here because of its location on the banks of the sacred River Ganges and its many temples. To gain an insight into the lives of the faithful, travel through the narrow lanes to visit the ghats at dawn and dusk to observe the prayer ceremonies. It is worth going to both as the evening is a rather noisy affair with drumming and fire accompanying the priest-led chanting.
