What antidote to months of cold and gloom could be better than to head south to three Canary Islands and Madeira for a spell of much needed warmth? We will stop at La Coruña on its promontory in Galicia and on the voyage back home we call in to Lisbon, one of Europe’s most beguiling capitals. We will be joined on board by some of our favourite musicians: the outstanding Piatti String Quartet, flautist Adam Walker, clarinettist Matthew Hunt, pianist Paul James and multi-award winning soprano Katherine Broderick.
La Coruña is a vibrant and colourful port, its harbour guarded by the Tower of Hercules, the oldest Roman lighthouse still in use. The old quarter is a maze of picturesque and narrow streets. Our first port of call in the Canary Islands is Santa Cruz, dominated by Mount Teide. We’ll see the striking concert hall designed by Calatrava on the city’s seafront. We’ll have the opportunity to visit Puerto de la Cruz to enjoy an optional excursion to include visits to a historic Canarian manor house and a wonderful orchid garden. We sail across to nearby Gran Canaria and visit Las Palmas where you will be able to walk to the historic old town tosee the cathedral and the Casa de Colón, visited by Christopher Columbus in 1492. In sharp contrast we will stop at the unspoiled island of La Palma which has glorious and rugged scenery. Our final island is Madeira, a paradise for plant lovers. We’ll be offering anoptional excursion to the renowned Blandy garden here. Our final call will be Lisbon on the banks of the majestic River Tagus and full of reminders about Portugal’s glorious history when it was the centre of a great empire.
