The Eternal City is the perfect place to spend Christmas, and there is a wonderful festive atmosphere with streets, shops and monuments decorated in elegant style, Christmas trees in the majestic piazzas, and churches adorned with nativity displays and decorations. This time of year is also blissfully free from the crowds which descend in spring and summer, so we will be able to explore the city’s great galleries, religious buildings and ancient architecture in welcome tranquillity. As well as included visits to many of Rome’s important monuments and Christmas lunch in a local restaurant, there will also be free time to explore the city independently – and perhaps to attend a Christmas Eve mass one of the city’s smaller churches.

  • Day 1 - Fly to Rome

We fly to Rome and transfer to the 5 star Grand Hotel de la Minerve, wonderfully located on the Piazza de la Minerve, next to the Pantheon.
  • Day 2 - Forum & Palatine Hill

We start our tour with a visit to the Forum, dotted with basilicas, temples and triumphal arches constructed by numerous emperors. We will see the church of Santa Maria Antiquaon the beautiful Palatine Hill, which provides a link between antiquity and the Christian era. From there we will go to the Colosseum – perhaps the most famous of all Classical monuments. During the afternoon we visit the Capitoline Museum.
  • Day 3 - Galleria Borghese

This morning we will drive to the Galleria Borghese in the Borghese Gardens. Here we discover the superb collection of Cardinal Scipione Borghese, the nephew of Pope Paul V. Paintings by Caravaggio, Raphael and Titian, with sculptures from antiquity alongside works by Canova and Bellini, make for an unforgettable visit. Brief stops will be made at Santa Maria del Popolo with its two works by Caravaggio, and at San Andrea al Quirinale, designed by Bernini for ecclesiastical novices living on the Quirinale. The afternoon is free.
  • Day 4 - Christmas Day

An optional walk this morning before an included lunch will lead to the charming neighbourhood of Trastevere along the banks of the Tiber, in the shadow of the monumental Castel Sant’Angelo, Hadrian’s mausoleum, which towers over the river as it winds through the centre of Rome.
  • Day 5 - Pantheon & Doria Pamphili

Our first stop today is the Pantheon, the best-preserved building of Ancient Rome and one of the rare examples of a Classical structure which has endured unaltered to the present day. Commissioned as a temple and completed by Hadrian, the Pantheon has since been used as a church, and is the resting place of Raphael and Caracci as well as of two kings of Italy. We next go to San Luigi dei Francesi where we see The Life of St. Matthew by Caravaggio. Our final visit is to the Palazzo Doria Pamphili to see one of the most important art collections still in private hands. There are more than 1,000 rooms in the palazzo, which came into the family in 1647. Today, it is the English born Prince Jonathan Doria Pamphili who oversees his family’s great inheritance.
  • Day 6 - Return to London

We drive to the airport for the flight back to London.
