The Danube is one of Europe’s most important and majestic rivers, and this itinerary includes a journey through three of Central Europe’s magnificent capital cities: Budapest, Vienna and Bratislava. As well as the grand Imperial architecture and great museums and galleries of the former Habsburg Empire, you will glide through the glorious scenery of the Danube Valley including mediaeval castles, dramatic gorges and the rolling Wachau vineyards.

This cruise sails eastbound from Vilshofen in bavaria to Budapest on the AmaLea.

Budapest Three Hour Private Walking Tour

With an expert English-speaking guide you will visit the vast Baroque Buda Castle and Palace which sits imposingly on Castle Hill. Your guide will lead you through the surrounding UNESCO listed castle district of mediaeval, Baroque and 19th century buildings to the famous Fisherman’s Bastion – a fortified terrace with wonderful views towards Pest. In front of the Fisherman’s Bastion you will see the Matthias Church with its oriental inspired interior and ornately tiled roof. You will then head over to Pest to see St. Stephen's Basilica and walk along the grand Andrássy Avenue, lined with palaces, mansion houses and the State Opera House.


  • Day 1 - Fly to Budapest

    Fly to Budapest and your private transfer will whisk you to the Hotel Prestige in the centre of this former Imperial city.
  • Day 2 - City Walking Tour

    Enjoy a private walking tour in the company of an expert local guide this morning, including some of the landmarks of the city’s Pest side, such as Heroes’ Square and the magnificent Parliament building. Board your vessel in the afternoon and check-in to your stateroom before a drinks reception and dinner, followed by a special Illuminations cruise past the capital’s glittering riverfront.
  • Day 3 - Final day in Budapest

    A final day in Budapest, perhaps taking in the Buda side of the river, home to the castle, a cobbled old town, and the impressive Hungarian National Gallery.
  • Day 4 - Bratislava

    Today you will arrive in Bratislava, host to the crowning ceremonies of 11 Hungarian kings and queens between 1536 and 1830. Explore the city and castle with an optional walking tour.
  • Day 5 - Vienna

    Vienna is a mecca for music-lovers with its majestic Opera House and elegant concert halls dedicated to the works of the composers and musicians who lived and worked in the city – Brahms, Beethoven, Schubert, Strauss, Haydn and Mozart among them. During your day in the city you might also explore the great art galleries and museums, the Imperial Palaces of the Habsburgs, and St. Stephen’s Cathedral.
  • Day 6 - Weissenkirchen

    After leaving Vienna, the Danube passes through spectacular scenery and at Weissenkirchen you will have several options for excursions. Take a walking tour of Dürnstein before visiting the UNESCO-listed Melk Abbey, explore charming Weissenkirchen itself and its abbey, or join a wine-tasting. Later in the day, you will sail through the Strudengau Valley to medieval Grein for an exclusive visit to the more than 500-year-old Greinburg Castle.
  • Day 7 - Linz

    The ship arrives in Linz today, from where you can visit Salzburg on a day trip, or stay in Linz for the morning and then head to the 2000-year old city of Passau.
  • Day 8 - Regensburg

    Explore Regensburg, one of Germany’s best preserved medieval cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on a guided walking tour showcasing the city’s architectural highlights, including the Old Town Hall and the Porta Praetoria.
  • Day 9 - Nuremburg

    Enjoy a scenic morning cruise as the ship crosses the Continental Divide via the Main-Danube Canal to Nuremberg. Explore the medieval city center with a tour that showcases the Imperial Castle and the famous town wall, as well as Albrecht Dürer’s home and Market Square with its legendary fountain. Or you can take a guided tour of the city’s WWII history, including a visit to the infamous Zeppelin Field, a museum built on the site of former Nazi rallies and the site of the Nuremberg Trials when not in session.
  • Day 10 - Fly home

    Disembarking in Nuremberg, you will be free to explore the city and depart on the evening flight out.
