Houses, Galleries & Gardens of Sussex and Kent

4 nights Prices on request

Explore the rolling landscapes, magnificent houses and gardens, and important new art galleries of the ‘Garden of England’ from the 5* Grand Hotel in the centre of stately Eastbourne. Overlooking the English Channel, the hotel was described by the 11th Duke of Devonshire, who developed the town into a popular and refined resort as ‘the jewel in Eastbourne’s splendid crown.’ During the English summer the wonderful gardens at Sissinghurst and Great Dixter are at their spectacular best, and we shall spend time on the coast in both Eastbourne and Hastings – where striking new galleries have put these towns on the cultural map.

We will visit Firle Place, seat of the 8th Viscount Gage whose family have lived here for more than 500 years. An elegant country house at the foot of the South Downs, Firle Place is also home to the important Cowper Collection of paintings. Afterwards we will go to Charleston Farmhouse, which has associations with the Bloomsbury Set, and visit Berwick Church to see the murals by Duncan Grant. Visits to two great gardens are also included: Great Dixter, designed by Lutyens and made internationally famous by Christopher Lloyd; and Sissinghurst, created by Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson. We shall also discover two striking seafront art galleries: Eastbourne’s Towner Gallery and the Jerwood Gallery on the beach in Hastings with its important collection of British art; as well as Farley Farmhouse where we shall learn about photographer Lee Miller and artist Roland Penrose who entertained fellow artists including Picasso and Miró here.
