Iceland - Glaciers, Geysers & the Golden Circle

Reykjavik 5 nights Prices on request

Iceland is a land of dramatic wilderness, vast open spaces, natural wonders, teeming bird life – and very few people; a total of just 325,000 inhabitants, half of whom live in Reykjavik. During our stay we will see Iceland’s unique landscape as well as enjoying all the attractions of the capital city with its galleries, museums and churches. It has one of the most beautiful, state-of-the-art concert halls in the world, Harpa, which attracts musicians from all over the world – we will meet members of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra during our visit. We stay in the capital and make three excursions into the wilderness by comfortable, specially modified Land Rover Defenders, with extralarge wheels to cope with the off-road conditions.

What's included

...when you travel with Kirker

  • Return flights
  • Five nights’ accommodation with breakfast
  • Three dinners
  • Sightseeing as described, all entrances fees and gratuities
  • The services of the Kirker Tour Lecturer and a local guide.

  • Day 1 - Arrival in Reykjavik

We fly to Reykjavik and transfer to the stylish 4 star Hotel Borg, on Austurvöllur Square, at the heart of the city.
  • Day 2 - Reykjavik City Tour

We begin our visit with a tour of Reykjavik itself, a compact but charming capital city. Highlights include the National Museum of Iceland; the old fishing harbour, Hofdi House (where the crucial summit between Reagan and Gorbachev took place in 1986); Hallgrímskirkja Church with its 73m spire; the Viking Maritime Museum and the Culture House where we will see mediaeval illuminated manuscripts.
  • Day 3 - Golden Circle Excursion

Our excursion to the Golden Circle serves as a wonderful introduction to the vast landscape and the island’s geology. We go to the Thingvellir National park where the first Icelandic parliament was founded 1,000 years ago, and then to the geysers and hot springs in Haukadalur. The spectacular waterfall Gullfoss seems to represent the quintessence of Iceland’s landscape.
  • Day 4 - Crossing the Mid-Atlantic Ridge

Travelling in the opposite direction today, we cross the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the European and North American tectonic plates meet, to explore the Reykjanes Peninsula, east of Reykjavik. Fissures, lava fields and geothermal activity combine to create a lunar landscape with a sense of a completely different world.
  • Day 5 - Iceland's South Coast

Today’s journey to the south coast will show us a very different landscape, a lowland region of fertile farmland, fringed by black sand beaches and glacier-topped mountains. Walking behind waterfalls, seeing the cliffs teeming with birds and an encounter with a glacier make for a typical Icelandic day out.
  • Day 6 - Departure Day

The morning is free before leaving for the airport or, for those who wish, there will be an optional visit to the famous Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa in a lava field.
