L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped

Paris Arc de Triomphe 3 nights Price from £699 per person

Saturday, 18 September to Sunday, 3 October, 2021

The celebrated international artist, Christo, famous for spectacular public artworks including the wrapping of Berlin’s Reichstag in 1995, had long envisioned a grand project to wrap the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Whilst the artist himself died in May 2020, the project will finally be realised this autumn, after 60 years of planning and involves 25,000 square metres of fabric and 3,000 metres of rope, in colours to reflect the French tricolor.

The project was first conceived in 1961, when Christo was living in Paris, in a small room near the Arc de Triomphe. It was during this period that he started to make sketches and studies, which continued in subsequent decades, as he sought support and permission for such a bold project. In the decades since, he established a reputation as one of the world’s best-loved public artists, with successful installations around the globe ranging from The Wrapped Reichstag in 1995 to The Gates in New York City's Central Park in January 2005, featuring 7,503 gates made of saffron-coloured fabric. The Floating Piers, was a series of walkways on the surface of Lake Iseo in Italy, during the summer of 2016, while his London Mastaba was a floating installation The Serpentine from June to September 2018.

As with previous projects, L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped will be self-funded and the materials used will be recycled, whilst The Eternal Flame, in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Arc de Triomphe, will continue to burn throughout the preparation and display of the artwork.
