Until recently, it was the rare visitor indeed who, after landing at Málaga airport, took the trouble to discover the city. Most headed off instead to the beaches of the Costa del Sol or inland to the historic cities of Andalucía. Today this has all changed. Inspired by the fact that Pablo Picasso was born in Málaga, the city set about reinventing itself as a major art destination. Carmen Thyssen brought her collection of Spanish art to Málaga, and great cultural institutions from St. Petersburg and Paris reached out to establish branches here. The Contemporary Art Centre opened in 2003 in a former grocery wholesale building and quickly established itself as a major gallery. Picasso was the catalyst for the transformation of the city of his birth into a world class destination for all art lovers.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Fly to Málaga

We fly to Málaga and on arrival transfer to the 4 star Hotel Molina Lario where we stay for the duration of the tour.
  • Day 2 - Picasso's birthplace & Museo Picasso Málaga

We begin our exploration of Málaga with a visit to the house on Plaza de la Merced where Pablo Picasso was born on 25 October 1881. Today the house is a museum and gallery with many works by Picasso from his formative years, including drawings and ceramics. There are also pictures by other artists on display. Although Picasso very seldom returned to Málaga he always thought fondly of his time there throughout his life. Next we go to the Museo Picasso Málaga which was extensively refurbished in 2017. Here over two hundred of Picasso’s works are exhibited in chronological order. Early portraits, works in the classical style and cubist paintings from the 1930’s are all here. The day will end with a visit to Málaga Cathedral, which dates from the 16th century.
  • Day 3 - Museo Carmen Thyssen & Museo Ruso

This morning we go to the Museo Carmen Thyssen where we see Baroness Thyssen’s personal collection of works by Spanish artists from the 19th and 20th centuries. Zurbarán, Sorolla, Ortega and countless more are represented. The landscape paintings include many works depicting Andalucía. This afternoon’s visit to the Museo Ruso will be in stark contrast. At this Andalucian outpost of St. Petersburg’s Russian Museum, we will see art from mediaeval icons to 20th century Socialist Realism. The museum presents two or three continually changing exhibits at any one time, covering different periods of Russia’s artistic heritage.
  • Day 4 - The Alhambra Palace, Granada

We leave Málaga for the day and travel to Granada where we see the magnificent Alhambra. The Alhambra is the pinnacle of Moorish art and architecture, a royal residence of breathtaking grandeur and beauty. We will see the Royal Chapel and the sublime Generalife Gardens that surround the palace. After the visit there will be an included lunch and time to wander through the historic Albaicín district before returning to Málaga.
  • Day 5 - Contemporary Art Centre & Centre Pompidou Málaga

This morning we go to the Contemporary Art Centre to see works by leading Spanish and other European artists. Later we go to the first ever branch of the Pompidou Centre outside of Paris, the Centre Pompidou Málaga, an impressive glass cube overlooking Málaga’s harbour. Works by Frida Kahlo, Francis Bacon, Léger, Picasso and others are on display here.
  • Day 6 - Ronda

We leave Málaga and drive to Ronda, dramatically sited above a gorge with views out across the Serranía de Ronda mountains. We will visit the Palacio de Mondragón with its cool Moorish courtyards and patios, and then have some time to explore Ronda independently. We will have lunch in a favourite Kirker hotel, Fuente de la Higuera, originally an 18th century olive mill. Afterwards we return to Málaga.
  • Day 7 - Return flight to London

We leave for the airport and the flight back to the UK.
