New Year in St Petersburg

St. Petersburg 5 nights Prices on request

The days may be short but there is something uniquely atmospheric about visiting St. Petersburg in the depths of winter and the city takes on a different character when the canals and palaces are dusted in snow. It may be cold outside but the warmth of the welcome from the locals will more than compensate, and temperatures inside the galleries and museums stay high – but they are blissfully free of visitors. Wrap up warm and dress in flamboyant Russian style, dig out that Dr Zhivago fur hat and enter into the spirit of Russia at New Year. The citizens of St. Petersburg will be celebrating in great style and you will, too.

  • Day 2 - Russian Museum, Church on the Spilled Blood & Fabergé Museum

We begin in the great Russian Museum with its wonderful collection of art and icons from all periods of the country’s history. Later we visit the Church on Spilled Blood, one of the few churches in St Petersburg designed in the ornate mediaeval Russian style, with onion domes and golden mosaics, followed by the Fabergé Museum housed in the Shuvalov Palace. This evening we will enjoy a special New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner in the hotel.

New Year’s Day is free for independent sightseeing at your own leisure. You may wish to visit the Alexander Nevsky Monastery where a host of Russian cultural luminaries are buried.

Today is devoted to the Hermitage, one of the world’s greatest collections of paintings and decorative and fine arts, which is housed in Catherine the Great’s former Winter Palace. Here we will find Old Masters, Impressionists, ceramics, porcelain and antiquities, and our guided tour will include a special visit to the Diamond Room. After an introduction to the highlights of the collection, the afternoon is free for you to stay on in the Hermitage to explore independently.
  • Day 5 - Pavlovsk & Pushkin

Heading out of the city itself to the former summer retreats of the Imperial families, we will visit two sumptuous palaces designed for the Tsars. Pavlovsk, built for the son of Catherine the Great as a private residence and the Catherine Palace at Pushkin, a flamboyant Baroque showpiece designed by the architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli and the setting for some of Russia’s grandest balls and receptions.

Highly Recommended
St. Petersburg, Russia, Europe

Lovingly restored by Rocco Forte Hotels, the Astoria has been at the centre of the City’s history since it opened in 1912. Legend has it that Hitler sent out invitations to a celebratory party in the hotel’s Winter Garden in anticipation of his capture of St. Petersburg and needless to say, the party never took place.
