An eleven-year renovation at a cost of €100 million has now been completed, transforming this formerly dilapidated gallery into one of Europe’s most exciting new art spaces. The original building, dating back to 1890, has been carefully restored and modernised, refreshing the neoclassical facade and incorporating new galleries into what was once internal courtyards. This has created 40% additional exhibition space in contemporary halls filled with natural light, where more of the collection's Old Master paintings can now been enjoyed.

Highlights of the impressive permanent collection includes many works from Flemish masters such as Peter Paul Rubens, Hans Memling, Jan van Eyck and Anthony van Dyck, the world’s largest collection of works by James Ensor and a number of pieces from international artists, most notably by Fouquet, Titian, Modigliani, Rodin and Chagall.

Whilst in Antwerp be sure to visit the Cathedral to see the great altarpieces by Rubens, learn about the fascinating 16th century printers Christophe Plantin and Jan Moretus at the Plantin-Moretus Museum and, if you travel before the end of the year, you will be able to visit the Rubens House before it closes for a long-term renovation.
