Southern Stepping Stones

Southern India 13 nights Price from £3,290 per person

To get a real flavour of southern India, this itinerary takes in the highlights of Tamil Nadu in the east and Kerala in the west. As one of the key port towns of the British East India Company, Chennai (known then as Madras) is dominated by their fort. Heading south along the coast the vast monolithic statues of Mahabalipuram make for a wonderful detour before arriving in Pondicherry, synonymous with the French colonial era where time must also be taken to experience traditional Tamil life. The famous historic temples in Tanjore and Madurai are both popular pilgrimage sites and make the perfect stops on the way through the Western Ghats.

Crossing the hills into Kerala, Thekkady has one of the most picturesque and aromatic landscapes, rich with spices. While in Thekkady you will also visit the Periyar National Park with its large elephant population. Crossing to the Malabar coast, this journey ends in Cochin, with the Fort area, rich with the colonial history of all nationalities, sitting alongside one of the south’s most successful modern cities.
