The music of Ludwig van Beethoven, born in Bonn on 17 November 1770, will be celebrated around the world andThe music of Ludwig van Beethoven, born in Bonn on 17 November 1770, will be celebrated around the world and throughout the year in 2020. The city of the composer’s birth is treating itself to two monumental celebrations – The European Cycle in March and, later in September, The Symphony Cycle. At the helm of the Beethoven Festival since 2014, Nike Wagner, granddaughter of Franz Liszt has revolutionised the festival and has long been preparing for this major anniversary which she has done with her customary style and imagination with some trademark controversy along the way.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Fly to Dusseldorf

    We fly to Dusseldorf and transfer to the 4 star centrally located Kanzler Hotel. We will travel the short distance to the Opera House by tram.
  • Day 2 - Orgelbau Klais

    This morning we visit the house where Beethoven was born. We shall see the permanent exhibition of Beethoven memorabilia and historic instruments. Later we take a trip to the Orgelbau Klais and visit the workshop where these famous organsare still made today. Founded in 1882 and still run by a member ofthe Klais family, their instruments can be found in Cologne Cathedral and major concert halls across the globe.
  • Day 3 - Cologne

    Today we go to Cologne where we will visit the famous cathedral, the first Gothic church to be built in the Rhineland. Begun in 1248, it took more than 600 years to be completed.
  • Day 4 - Cruise on the Rhine

    This morning we shall take a cruise on the Rhine. We sail to Königswinter and board a cog railway to Schloss Drachenburg. We enjoy an included lunch and a wine-tasting before returning to Bonn.
  • Day 5 - Independent sightseeing.

    The day is free for independent sightseeing. 
  • Day 6 - Brühl

    Today we go to Brühl to see two of the most impressive palaces in Germany, the Augustusberg and Falkenlust, built for the Elector of Cologne. Designed by Cuvillies, they were the first Rococo buildings in Germany and of particular note are the magnificent staircase by Balthasar Neuman and the extensive gardens in the French style.
  • Day 7 - Fly home

    After breakfast we travel to Dusseldorf airport for the flightback to London.

Music Programme

Theodor Currentzis was to have conducted all the concerts but he has been advised to cut back on his engagements and so now he will conduct two of the four concerts included in the tour - the concerts on 15 and 16 March.

The concerts on 18 and 19 March will now be conducted by the Italian conductor Giovanni Antonini. He is the founder and conductor of the distinguished baroque ensemble, Il giardino armonico. He is also the Principal Conductor of the Kammerorchester, Basel and the Mozarteum Orchestra, Salzburg.

The order of the concerts has also changed and the revised schedule is as follows:

15 March: Symphonies Nos 8 & 7

16 March: Symphonies Nos 2 & 5

18 March: Symphonies Nos 6 & 4

19 March: Symphonies Nos.1 & 3

The Music-Aeterna Orchestra will still play at every concert as originally planned.
