Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Jesmond Dene House Hotel

Make your own way to the Jesmond Dene House Hotel, a short taxi journey from Newcastle upon Tyne train station. Kirsty will host a drinks reception this evening before dinner in the hotel’s very good restaurant. Jesmond Dene House is a Grade-II listed Arts & Crafts mansion, 15 minutes from the centre of Newcastle, overlooking the wooded valley of Jesmond Dene. It has 40 elegantly furnished bedrooms, a comfortable lounge and welcoming bar and the excellent Fern Dining Room, where Executive Head Chef, Danny Parker, offers a modern, seasonal menu.
  • Day 2 - Mindrum & Capheaton Hall

This morning we will head north to the village of Mindrum, almost on the Scottish border, where we see two gardens created by two generations of the Fairfax family. We continue to Capheaton Hall, the seat of the Swinburne family since 1260. The current owner, Willy Browne-Swinburne, will show us the Swinburne family collection of art, books and engravings in the house. This will be followed by a tour of the glass houses and the wonderful walled garden, created by Willy’s wife Eliza.
  • Day 3 - Bide-a-Wee Cottage Gardens & Howick Arboretum

Today we will visit Bide-a-Wee Cottage Gardens in Morpeth, where Mark Robson has created a garden and plant nursery in an old sandstone quarry, where we will see a dazzling collection of agapanthus. In the afternoon we will continue to Howick Arboretum, with its extraordinary collection of trees. The owner will introduce the collection and there will be free time to explore independently.
  • Day 4 - Alnwick

One of the most spectacular highlights of Northumbria is Alnwick, where we visit one of England’s most impressive gardens, overlooked by a magnificent castle. The garden was first laid down in 1750 by Capability Brown, and redeveloped in extraordinary style over the past 20 years under the stewardship of Jane Percy, Duchess of Northumberland. We will also visit Lilburn Tower, where we will see 10 acres of magnificent walled and formal gardens and a 12th century church.
  • Day 5 - Tour Ends

The tour ends after breakfast this morning.
