The past two or three decades have seen a new crop of bold and beautiful gardens maturing within the romantic landscape of southeast Ireland and this tour presents an exceptional opportunity to meet the plantsmen and women at the heart of this horticultural revolution. As well as a terrific variety of plants that thrive in Wicklow’s mild and (frequently) damp climate, you can expect plenty of good humour, tall tales and glorious views all along the way. And, as they’ll all tell you – July is the perfect time to see their gardens at their very best.

  • Day 1 - Fly to Dublin & Dower House

We fly to Dublin and transfer to the 4 star Brooklodge Hotel where we stay for the duration of the tour. In the afternoon we will visit Dower House for a private tour of the garden. Patricia Butler is a tireless plantswoman who is always keen to chat with other gardeners familiar with the pleasures and problems of managing a large garden single-handed.
  • Day 2 - Powerscourt

This morning we will visit the first of three private gardens, Alfred Cochrane’s Corke Lodge, in Shankill. An architect who spent many years working on new buildings and old gardens in Italy and the Lebanon, Alfred will personally introduce his very green and architectural garden. We will then continue to the renowned gardens at Powerscourt, just ten minutes away, for lunch overlooking the sweeping gardens and a walk around the lakes and magnificent arboretum. Finally, we will meet Carmel Duignan, a former garden programmes producer for Irish TV, who has filled a suburban garden in Shankill with an extraordinary range of exotics, clematis and roses.
  • Day 3 - Lamb Hill

Today we drive along a spectacular mountain road that takes us to the high pass in the Wicklow Mountains, known as the Sally Gap. We visit Lamb Hill, close to Blessington, to find plantsman extraordinaire Jimi Blake, creator of Hunting Brook garden, and custodian of its magical woodland. Jimi is one of Ireland’s leading plantsmen and his thoughtful plant choices and combinations are entrancing. He is a keen advocate of natural healing through wholefoods and a terrific vegetarian cook and offers delicious home-made soup and bread for lunch. After lunch we will visit his sister, June Blake, and have a private tour of her nursery and garden in Tinode. Every inch of her garden is arrestingly planted and you’ll come away with your notebooks filled with imaginative ideas.
  • Day 4 - Mount Usher

This morning we will visit Mount Usher for a private guided with the head gardener Sean. The gardens are huge, filled with wonderful trees and shrubs as well as exciting borders and traversed by the River Vartry, crossed by several bridges. In the afternoon we continue for just 15 minutes to Trudder Grange. Developed over the last 30 years from a stony field into a garden full of shrubs and herbaceous borders, owner Vanessa Hayes has also created an organic vegetable garden and a greenhouse producing many varieties of tomatoes. There is an acre of wild flower meadow in the walled garden which is planted with unusual specimen trees.
  • Day 5 - Blackrock and return flight home

We depart Brooklodge hotel and travel to Dublin stopping at the historic Blackrock to visit Helen Dillon’s new garden and enjoy a guided tour and coffee with this remarkable plantswoman. We will then continue to Dublin airport for our flight home.
