A seven night cruise on board AmaDante and two nights in Basel | 17 September 2020


Traversing the borders of Switzerland, France and Germany, this itinerary follows the course of the Rhine and Main rivers through the heart of mediaeval Europe including some of the most picturesque and perfectly-preserved towns and cities such as Rothenburg and Bamberg.

Starting your voyage in Basel, we include a two night stay in the centre of Switzerland’s art capital before you board the vessel. You will then travel through Alsace, the wine regions of the Rhineland and the dramatic Rhine Gorge, and into northern Bavaria where you will disembark in Nuremburg.

  • Day 1 - Fly to Basel

    Arrive in Basel and stay two nights at the Gaia hotel.
  • Day 2 - Explore Basel

    Bordering France to the east and Germany to the north, Basel is a convenient hub to explore and traverse Switzerland and central Europe. Basel, on the river Rhine is a wonderful art city, lauded in the past by the great Picasso during the 1960's as having a thriving art culture in its galleries and museums. View the gothic spires of Basel Minster in the morning and make your way across town to Marketplaz to see the Town Hall and its fresco paintings dating back to the 16th century.
  • Day 3 - Embark

    Embark on the AmaDante cruise.
  • Day 4 - Strasbourg

    Ludwigshafen is your gateway to a choice of three excursions. Visit the Mannheim Baroque Palace—one of the largest palaces in Europe, which is furnished with over 800 exhibits, recreating its bygone grandeur.  It is now home to the European Parliament and the European Court of Human Rights, both of which are perfect stopping opportunities. 
  • Day 5 - Rüdesheim

    Continue your exploration of Rüdesheim am Rhein, a prolific and scenic winemaking region. The Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Cabinet offers visitors a chance to enjoy the most extensive collection of self-playing instruments in the world. Alternatively the historic Brömserburg Castle gives visitors an insight into one of the oldest castles with a wine museum in the Middle Rhine region, dating back to over a thousand years combining both antiquity and modernity.
  • Day 6 - Ludwigshafen

    Ludwigshafen is one of the lesser-known destinations along the Rhine and only recently has developed into a thriving art scene. The premier modern art facility, Wilhelm-Hack-Museum with huge exterior mosaics displays works from Andy Warhol, Mondrian and Malevich. 
  • Day 7 - Miltenberg

    Arrive up the slopes of Miltenberg and view the hundreds of colourful timbered houses and pedestrianised little valleys. The townscape has been depicted in period dramas and movies over the years, each unique edifice consists of cafes, speciality shops and taverns.
  • Day 8 - Würzburg

    Würzburg, a beautiful city bursting known for its lavish baroque and rococco archictecture, particularly the 18th century Residenz Palace with huge Teopolo frescoes and its distinctive flattened round shaped wine bottles. 
  • Day 9 - Nuremberg

    Enjoy a scenic morning cruise as the ship crosses the Continental Divide via the Main-Danube Canal to Nuremberg. Explore the medieval city center with a tour that showcases the Imperial Castle and the famous town wall, as well as Albrecht Dürer’s home and Market Square with its legendary fountain. Or you can take a guided tour of the city’s WWII history, including a visit to the infamous Zeppelin Field, a museum built on the site of former Nazi rallies and the site of the Nuremberg Trials.
  • Day 10 - Departure

    Disembarking in Nuremburg you will be transferred to the airport today for your flight home.
