Travellers on the Silk Road crossed the ancient Oxus River to the great trading centres of Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand. These cities that connected Rome to Eastern China were filled with scholars in magnificent madrassas and merchants trading in exotic bazaars. Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan have left their imprint on the region but Tamerlane and descendants built many of the colourful tiled buildings that we discover on this tour. Uzbekistan’s remoteness and resilience has protected its most treasured buildings for modern travellers to enjoy as their predecessors did six hundred years ago.
