Venice is a unique city where 8th century mosaics can be seen alongside paintings by Tintoretto and Tiepolo, and it is also home to one of the world’s most important contemporary art events. Held since 1895, the Biennale presents a diverse array of exhibitions, installations and events throughout the city. Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Fly to Venice

Fly to Venice where we will be met by our water taxi for the transfer across the lagoon to the 4* Deluxe Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal, located in the heart of Venice, with an excellent restaurant. This evening Charlie will give an introductory talk on Venice and the Biennale.
  • Day 2 - Giardini

Our first morning will be spent visiting the Biennale’s national pavilions in the Giardini. Entitled “May You Live In Interesting Times”, this year’s Biennale is curated by Ralph Rugoff, director of London’s Hayward Gallery. There are 91 national participants and this year’s British entry is by the Turner prize nominee Cathy Wilkes. After free time for lunch we will then continue to the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, including a visit to the Cini Foundation.
  • Day 3 - Venice Arsenale

This morning we return to the Biennale, exploring the exhibitions at the Venice Arsenale, the former naval dockyards of the city. We will then have lunch in a local restaurant, and then explore the Cannaregio area of Venice, one of the most authentic districts of the city today, where you will still find local residents and few tourists. We will see the new installation by author and ceramicist Edmund de Waal in a 16th-century synagogue located in the former Jewish Ghetto, before visiting the church of I Gesuiti with its wonderful baroque interior, and Madonna dell’Orto, adorned with paintings by Tintoretto who was also buried here.
  • Day 4 - Peggy Guggenheim

This morning we will visit Francois Pinault’s spectacular ‘Punta della Dogana’ gallery of Contemporary art, located in the former customs house at the entrance to the Grand Canal, before visiting the nearby Peggy Guggenheim collection, in the palazzo where she lived. This is one of the finest collections of 20th century art in Europe, with masterpieces by Magritte, Dali and Giacometti. We will have lunch in a local restaurant before continuing to the newly restored church of San Sebastiano with its stunning Veronese frescoes and canvases. Our day will conclude with a visit to the Church of Gesuati, where we will see very important works by the 18th century Venetian masters Tiepolo, Piazzetta and Sebastiano Ricci.
  • Day 5 - Return to UK

The final morning is at leisure before we are collected for the transfer back to the airport.
