Held since 1895, the Biennale presents a diverse array of exhibitions, installations and events throughout the city. • Day 2 - Giardini

Our first morning will be spent visiting the Biennale’s national pavilions in the Giardini. Entitled “May You Live In Interesting Times”, this year’s Biennale is curated by Ralph Rugoff, director of London’s Hayward Gallery. There are 91 national participants and this year’s British entry is by the Turner prize nominee Cathy Wilkes. After free time for lunch we will then continue to the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, including a visit to the Cini Foundation.

We will see the new installation by author and ceramicist Edmund de Waal in a 16th-century synagogue located in the former Jewish Ghetto, before visiting the church of I Gesuiti with its wonderful baroque interior, and Madonna dell’Orto, adorned with paintings by Tintoretto who was also buried here.

We will have lunch in a local restaurant before continuing to the newly restored church of San Sebastiano with its stunning Veronese frescoes and canvases.
