The Northern Lights

The aurora borealis, or Northern Lights are one of the world’s most spectacular phenomena. They occur as a result of solar particles reacting with the upper atmosphere, which creates an incandescent ring of vivid light around the pole - a spellbinding sight for those lucky enough to see the show from the ground, and a true must-see experience for discerning travellers with a sense of adventure.

Whilst it is always a matter of luck whether the aurora appear or not, the best places from which to see the display include the more remote parts of Iceland and Scandinavia where light pollution is at a minimum and the night sky is dark. An expert local guide is also an invaluable way to increase your chance of experiencing this unforgettable display first hand. Whether or not you see the lights, a winter short break in Scandinavia is a magical experience with picturesque pine forests, crisp fresh air and deep powdery snow in the countryside, and delicious Nordic cuisine and atmospheric craft markets in the region’s charming towns and cities.
