Christopher Kilburn is Professor of Volcanology at University College London (UCL) and Director of the UCL Hazard Centre.
A fledgling freelance science writer at the start of his career, he has belonged to the Association of British Science Writers since 1978. It is not easy, though, to escape the lure of volcanoes and so he has spent the last
four decades investigating their behaviour, enjoying positions in Italy
- at the Vesuvius Observatory in Naples, the University of Naples
Federico II and the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology
in Rome -as well as at the Montserrat Volcano Observatory, University
of Vienna (Austria), NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (California,
U.S.A) and the University of Lancaster. In 1997, Christopher and Bill McGuire co-founded the Greig Fester UCL Hazard Research Centre (today the UCL Hazard Centre), Europe’s first academic multi-hazard research centre and, in 2002, he launched the UK’s first Master’s programme in Geophysical Hazards.
