Guido Giordano

Guido is an expert in volcanology and geothermics. His experience is broad and includes the physical volcanology of eruptive, transport and depositional processes, the geochemical evolution of magmas from source to vent, the rheology of magmas, from case studies on all continents and geological settings.

He has long and extensive experience in mapping entire volcanoes and coordinating research projects on the styles, processes and deposits on the full spectrum of eruptions and associated magma plumbing systems (e.g., Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei, Stromboli, Etna, Colli Albani, Sabatini, Roccamonfina, Bolsena; Italy; Tocomar, Cerro Galan, Argentina; Mt St Helens, USA, Mt Melbourne, Antarctica; Volcan Llaima, Chile) and volcanic provinces (e.g., Cabo de Gata, Spain; Newer Volcanic Province, Australia), which shaped his holistic vision of how volcanoes evolve across their entire life cycle, helping identify major knowledge gaps in the field which need filling.

Guido has been appointed to many national and international advisory boards regarding volcanology and volcanic crisis response, as well as being keynote speaker at international volcanology conferences. He served as Head of Geological Sciences at University Roma Tre from 2019-2025 where he also currently teaches.

Guido has published more than 190 papers in high impact journals such as Nature Communications, Annual Reviews of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Scientific Reports, Earth Science Reviews, Earth and Planetary Science Letters, as well as on the best sectorial journals, like Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research and Bulletin of Volcanology. He is also author of several monographs and coauthor with Ray Cas and John Wright of the internationally acclaimed scholarly book “Volcanology” published in 2024 by Springer-Nature.
