A delightful time was had by all during our visit to Salisbury, which began with a tour of the Cathedral and was followed by a private talk and view of the Salisbury Museum's 'Rex Whistler: the Artist and His Patrons'.

Salisbury Cathedral

Meeting in the mid-afternoon, we embarked on our tour of Salisbury Cathedral. One of England’s most magnificent buildings, the cathedral is a prime example of early English Gothic design, built between 1220-1330. Impressively engineered, the cathedral has the tallest church spire in England at 225 feet high. We also discovered that the cathedral houses the world’s oldest mechanical clock, a well-preserved verge and foliot clock made in 1386. Inside, stained glass windows cast beautiful light, reflecting off the striking modern font designed by William Pye.

After a light refreshment break we proceeded to the Salisbury Museum, where we enjoyed a private view of the exhibition ‘Rex Whistler: the Artist and His Patrons'. This exhibition explores Whistler’s (1905-1944) paintings in the context of the artistic patronage he received, aiming to provide a greater understanding of the works through the lens of social and art history. We had the privilege of receiving an exclusive talk from Nikki Frater, independent art historian, writer and artist, and curator of the exhibition. Frater’s passion and expertise provided a fascinating insight into the life of the renowned British artist Rex Whistler.
