Altes Museum

Berlin, Germany

The Altes Museum is a 19th century building on Berlin’s Museum Island, dedicated to displaying classical antiquities and coins. Built between 1825 and 1830, it is a prominent example of German Neoclassical architecture.

The Museum’s collection consists of two parts: the Antikensammlung (collection of Classical Antiquities) and the Münzkabinett (coin cabinet). Within the Antikensammlung there is Greek art, ranging from stone and marble sculptures, vases and jewellery. Highlights include the ‘Berlin goddess’ 570 BC, the 'praying boy', the 'amphora of the Berlin painter'. Within the ‘blue chamber’, an assortment of objects from the Münzkabinett is on display, including some of the earliest coins from the 7th century BC to coins from 3rd century AD.
