Cultural Highlights
The Pinacoteca di Brera is located on the first floor of the Palazzo Brera where it boasts an extensive collection of over 400 works of art spanning the 14th-16th century. The Palazzo itself is a cultural centre, home to the Braidense national library and the Palazzo Criterio.
Dating back to 1809, the gallery was founded by Napoleon Bonaparte with the intention to preserve religious artwork. Today, visitors admire its collection of emotive masterpieces, sculptures and paintings which notably include works by Bellini and Raphael. Their recent launch of Palazzo Criterio in December 2024 has expanded the collection’s focus, showcasing 20th century artworks from artists such as Picasso, Jesi and Vitali.
Despite being located just a short distance from Duomo di Milano, the gallery only receives an average of 20,000 visitors per year. The building’s ornate 17th century renaissance architecture can be admired from the courtyard or the lush on-site botanical garden.
