The world’s largest particle physics laboratory, CERN, is located in Geneva, Switzerland. CERN is an acronym for Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire, the group who founded the institution in 1954. It is run by 23 member states, including the UK, who fund and direct its key operations.

Physicists at CERN look for answers about our universe by studying the particles that form the building blocks of its existence. Cutting-edge instruments are used in their research, such as particle accelerators and detectors, which are very large and intricate pieces of apparatus. Accelerators are used to make super-speed particle collisions and detectors are used to observe the results.

Aside from leading global research, CERN aims to pique people’s curiosity and inspire knowledge of particle physics. They run multiple interactive exhibitions, as well as demonstrations, guided tours and films- appropriate for both children and adults alike.

Entrance Fees

Visitors are welcome at no cost, where they can access interactive exhibitions, science demonstrations and films. Additionally, visitors can sign up for guided tours and lab workshops on a first-come, first-served basis. Guided tours and lab workshops can be booked on the day, up to 2 hours before, using the CERN-Visitors Wi-Fi.
