Cultural Highlights
The Conciergerie is a national monument and museum located along the banks of the River Seine in Paris. One of the oldest remains of Palais de la Cité, Conciergerie was originally built in the 6th century as a royal palace, and is now recognised as a UNESCO world-heritage site. Subsequent centuries saw its expansion and development into a magnificent example of 13th-century Gothic architecture, its interior comprising vaulted ceilings, gothic arches, and vast space. During the French Revolution, the Conciergerie was used as a courthouse and prison, housing 2,780 prisoners, including Marie Antoinette, who spent her final days here before being sentenced to death by guillotine.
Today, visitors can explore the Conciergerie and admire the Royal Palace and its spectacular gothic architecture. The museum offers insight into the lives of the Conciergerie’s prisoners, with a special section dedicated to Marie Antoinette’s time there, including a commemorative chapel built in the 19th century.
