Cultural Highlights
Duomo di Firenze (Florence Cathedral) is Florence’s most iconic landmark. Featuring a pink, white and green marble facade and a magnificent red dome, this spectacular cathedral dominates the Florentine skyline. It is the fourth largest cathedral in the world with a capacity of 30,000 people.
Construction of the cathedral began in 1296 and it opened to the public in 1436. While the building generally follows a gothic architectural style, elements such as its grand cupola display a Renaissance influence. The Cathedral’s cupola was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and is the largest masonry dome to have ever been built.
The Cathedral’s interior is illuminated by 44 stained glass windows, designed by the most iconic Florentine artists of the 14th and 15th century. Intricate frescoes, such as Renaissance master Giorgio Vasari’s The Last Judgement (1579) decorate the walls and ceilings of the Cathedral. The floor is an impressive geometric mosaic made from marble, making the Cathedral a spectacular experience from all angles.
