Cultural Highlights
A traditional resort town on Lake Geneva, Montreux is home to some of Switzerland’s most beautiful Christmas markets. Each year, the Montreux Christmas Market welcomes over 170 merchants who set up their stalls and chalets along the shore, throughout the quays of Lake Geneva, the Marché Couvert (covered market) and Grand Rue.
A wonderful opportunity for Christmas shopping, the many stalls offer a vast range of crafts, antiques, jewellery and Christmas decorations. There are also many food stalls serving festive Swiss cuisine - from raclette, fondue and sausages to Heisse Marroni (roasted chestnuts) and Äpfelchucheli (fried apple rings). Many well-known restaurants have stalls in this market, promising a range of high quality food to choose from.
Every day at 5, 6 & 7pm, as well as 4pm on Saturdays, a spectacular Santa Clause flies over the market in his sleigh, evoking a whimsical festive spirit in both young and old.
The market is open from 21 November to 24 December 2024, from 11:00 - 20:00 Monday - Thursday, 11:00 - 22:00 on Friday, 10:00 - 22:00 on Saturday and 10:00 - 20:00 on Sunday. The market closes for the year on the late afternoon of Christmas Eve, which in Switzerland is usually spent having private family celebrations rather than celebrating outside.
