Cultural Highlights
Opened in 1992, The Reina Sofia is one of the world’s largest modern art museums. Featuring extensive collections of Spain’s 20th century masters, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí, the museum provides a unique opportunity to view Spain’s greatest artistic contribution to the 20th century: cubism and surrealism. Part of the Golden Triangle of Art, it provides a modern perspective to the context of art history.
The Reina Sofia houses over 18,000 works of primarily Spanish art from the 20th century. Highlights include Picasso’s groundbreaking Guernica, an enormous oil painting renowned for its powerful anti-war messaging and complex symbolism. Further prominent artworks in the permanent collection include works from Dali, Gris and Miro. The collection also includes works from important female artists from the 20th century.
In addition to its vast collection of modern art, the museum provides an extensive library of art books, audio and video recordings for those looking to learn more about the museum’s collections.
Note: The museum is paperless and therefore there are no physical maps. Maps can be obtained by scanning a QR code with your smartphone.
