Cultural Highlights
Salzburg is a charming city, its cosy atmosphere and cobbled streets home to some of the world’s most picturesque Christmas markets. Divided into the Altstadt (old city) on the left bank and the Neustadt (new city) on the right bank, the city’s mix of baroque, mediaeval and 19th century architecture forms an idyllic festive landscape.
A selection of 4 Christmas markets offer traditional arts and crafts, gourmet ingredients and festive treats, complete with a series of live performances throughout the festive season. If you are lucky - you may even see the Krampus parade on 5 December, where crowds of people dress up as Krampus, a folklore character looking to frighten the children on Santa's naughty list.
Salzburger Christkindlmarkt
Adorned with overhead illuminated stars to resemble the night sky, the Salzburger Christkindlmarkt on Residenzplatz, located in Salzburg’s UNESCO-listed old town, is one of the world’s oldest Christmas markets.
Birthplace of renowned composer Mozart, expect to hear romantic melodies as you drift along the streets. A vibrant array of 100 traditional market stalls offer everything from handcrafted goods, ingredients and sweet treats, offering an excellent opportunity for Christmas shopping or indulging in local delicacies. A busy programme of events provides live performances which are paired perfectly with a warm glühwein and Linzer biscuits.
Hellbrunner Adventzauber
The palace grounds transform into an enchanting space, lined with hundreds of brightly decorated conifer trees, as the palace’s facade becomes a colourful beacon of festivity. The chance to ride on a horse-drawn carriage through the palace grounds serves as an excellent opportunity to take in the spectacular views. A generous selection of 60 stalls offer local crafts and produce, including wood-carved goods, toiletries and local honey.
The Hellbrunner Adventzauber offers a particularly lively advent program featuring live musical performances, as well as activities geared towards children such as a miniature railway and campfires for grilling sausages. Additionally, visitors are welcome to wander and admire the palace’s colourfully-lit trick fountains and baroque caves.
Mirabellplatz Market
Located in front of the Mirabell Palace, this cosy Christmas market is conveniently located in the centre of Salzburg. Ideal for those looking for a more intimate atmosphere, this market consists of around 15 stalls. While small, the Mirabellplatz Market offers a complete Christmas market experience, offering crafts, mulled wine and delicious local foods.
Sternarkaden
