Stockholm Christmas Markets

Stockholm, Sweden
Kirker Holidays

A visit to this nordic capital during the festive season is a time to enjoy the idyllic atmosphere. Sweden’s short daylight hours in winter means the Christmas lights begin to twinkle from mid afternoon- no need to wait until the evening to enjoy them! The city has a variety of Christmas markets occurring throughout, all offering a great selection of handcrafted goods and delectable cuisine. Enjoy a hot Glögg as you stroll through the market stalls as the sweet smell of freshly baked cinnamon buns drifts through the air. Stockholm’s markets begin to wind down as Christmas approaches- so we recommend planning your trip from late November to early December to maximise your experience.

Skansen, Djurgården

A traditional market located on Djurgården, an island of Stockholm. Set on the Bollnästorget plaza, this market consists of rows of over 70 wooden market stalls. Classically decorated with strings of fairy lights, this traditional Swedish market offers a wonderful selection of unique crafts that makes it excellent for Christmas shopping. Woollen items, handmade candles and ceramics offer a view of Sweden’s local crafts, while the smell of roasted almonds and cinnamon tempts you to try some of Sweden’s festive delicacies. The Skansen market runs a modest festive programme, inviting visitors to dance around the Christmas tree once a day.

Stortorget, Gamla Stan

Stockholm’s oldest Christmas market first started in 1837, located in Stockholm’s old town. Mediaeval buildings surround the square and add to the overall ambience. This market is decorated in a classic, understated style- clusters of red market stalls form a circle with a large Christmas tree in the middle. Makes you feel transported to a past time. Market stalls offer wonderful Christmas tree ornaments, wreaths, and knitwear items. Warm Glögg, candied almonds offer the perfect festive treat as you browse.
