Cultural Highlights
The Tallinn Christmas Market is one of Estonia's biggest annual events and has often been mentioned on lists of the best Christmas markets to visit. It is held in the historic setting of Tallinn's mediaeval Old Town Square, which makes for a more intimate experience than many of Europe's Christmas markets.
The Tallinn Christmas market
This is largely considered one of the best Christmas markets in Europe, taking place in the historic Town Hall Square (Raekoja Platz) which dates back to the 13th century. Mediaeval architecture and cobbled streets are transformed into a winter wonderland, replete with festooned lights and over 40 wooden stalls offering handcrafted gifts, local delicacies and hot drinks. The real centre piece of the market is the Christmas tree, which has been set up annually in Town Hall since 1441, making it the first Christmas tree to have been put on display in Europe.
Visitors can sample festive cuisine: from black pudding and sour cabbage to traditional homemade black rye bread, an Estonian staple, or perhaps sweet treats such as gingerbread and the traditional glögi (spiced mulled wine), often served with a shot of Vana Tallinn liqueur.
Opening hours – 21 November – 27 December 2025 10:00am – 8:00pm
St Catherine’s Passage
For a quieter alternative, you may like to visit the artisan-focused market at St. Catherine’s passage, just a short stroll from Town Hall Square. Here you can find an array of handmade gifts, ranging from pottery to textiles and jewllery made by local artisans. The passage way has historic architecture and cosy candlelight, a hidden gem in the heart of Tallinn’s Old Town.
