Cultural Highlights
New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art displays an extensive collection of art spanning 5,000 years of history. It has two iconic sites: the Met Fifth Avenue, the largest and more famous of the two, and the Met Cloisters, a smaller and more intimate museum surrounded by a beautiful park, overlooking the Hudson river.
The Met Fifth Avenue
The Metropolitan Museum of Art Fifth Avenue is the most visited museum in the United States and the fourth most visited museum in the world. It has an extensive collection covering art from the most prominent periods in history, spanning from ancient Egypt, to the Renaissance, to contemporary times.
Some of the most popular exhibits include the ancient Egyptian Temple of Dendur, Leutze's Washington Crossing the Delaware and Rembrant’s Aristotle with a Bust of Homer. The museum’s European art section was recently rehung in 2023, and now these paintings are arranged thematically rather than chronologically, spanning a broad range of centuries from 1300-1800.

The Met Cloisters
The Met Cloisters is based within a set of four cloisters in Fort Tryon Park. The museum houses a large collection of European mediaeval artworks, a mediaeval garden and a series of chapels. During the Middle Ages, cloisters were a place to reflect and unwind, and the Met aims to evoke a sense of mediaeval monastic life while being in the centre of New York City.
