Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum

Madrid, Spain

The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum is a national art museum in Madrid. Part of the Golden Triangle of Art, this museum hosts one of the largest art collections in the world covering artworks from the 13th to 20th century, including many masterpieces from over the centuries.

The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, established in 1992, originated from the private collection of Heinrich Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza de Kászon. Boasting over 1,600 paintings, the collection once held second-place for the world’s largest private art collection. The collection is extremely varied, featuring masters of the centuries including Van Eyck, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Degas, Van Gogh and Hopper.

In addition to its vast historic collections the museum aims to contextualise art history in a forward-thinking, progressive approach. Through its temporary exhibitions they bring light to various issues challenging the dominant narrative in art history, for instance shedding light on themes of feminism and colonialism throughout their collection.
