Cultural Highlights
The Vasa is a preserved 17th century Swedish warship, displayed in the Vasa Museum, Stockholm. The ship, at the time a specimen of Sweden’s most advanced engineering, capsized and sank in Stockholm harbour in 1628, just minutes after embarking on its maiden voyage. Remaining underwater for 333 years, Vasa was salvaged in 1961 and underwent a meticulous restoration process spanning almost half a century, before the museum opened its doors to the public in 1990.
The ship’s restoration maintained 98% of the original composition, making the Vasa the best-preserved 17th century ship in the world. It is adorned with 700 intricate, wood-carved sculptures, brightly painted and resembling iconic figures of classical mythology. The Vasa was not only to be a functional warship, but a grand display of Sweden's power.
Learn about the tragic, yet fascinating story of Sweden’s greatest warship, and the vital role it played in advancements in nautical engineering.
