Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat

Nice, France
Kirker Holidays

Amongst the glamorous villas of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat lies the striking Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild: a palace surrounded by nine themed gardens, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

The grand, rose-tinted mansion was designed in the early 20th century by French architect Aaron Messiah. It was built for Baroness Béatrice de Rothschild, a member of the prominent Rothschild family of bankers and art collectors.

The Baroness, known for her tremendous wealth and eccentric tastes, stylishly furnished each room with antique furniture, and used the villa to display her extensive art and porcelain collections. Nine gardens surround the property, each with a different theme: French, Spanish, Japanese, Florentine, Provençal, exotic, a stone garden, a rose garden and a garden of Sèvres. Within the gardens there are musical fountains that play every 20 minutes.

Upon her death, the Baroness donated her property and art collections to the Académie des Beaux-Arts. Now, visitors are welcome to enjoy the villa, its collections and gardens 365 days a year.
