Bruges

City

Overview

In the Middle Ages, Bruges was one of the richest cities in northern Europe. But it was bypassed by the industrial revolution; the result is a mediaeval masterpiece with cobbled streets, guild houses, palaces and stone bridges over hidden canals. In our unique Kirker Guide Notes we recommend some of the city’s best restaurants. A selection of the finest examples of Flemish art can be found in the city as well as treasures from all over Europe. The richly detailed canvasses by Van Eyck and Memling can be seen at the Groeninge Museum and Michelangelo’s moving and inspiring Madonna with Child at the Church of Our Lady are just a few of its treasures.
