Overview

Munich is one of Europe’s most important cultural cities, capital of Bavaria and a world-class centre for art, architecture and music - especially opera. Grand avenues and squares, imposing public buildings and a kaleidoscope of Baroque, Rococo, Second Empire influenced, jugendstil (Art Nouveau) and Art Deco architecture make it one of the most beautiful of all cities. Also known as “the northernmost city of Italy” for its' relaxed Mediterranean café culture and Italianate architecture. Visitors can also enjoy excellent cuisine, including renowned Italian and Japanese restaurants, traditional Bavarian breweries, stylish beer gardens and wine bars featuring excellent German wines. The Bavarian State Opera, with its close association with Mozart, Wagner and Strauss, is on every discerning enthusiast’s wish list - they also offer an impressive range of ballet performances. One of the world’s oldest art galleries, the Alte Pinakothek is home to a significant collection of Old Masters including Leonardo da Vinci and Dürer, while the Lenbachhaus has the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Kandinsky and the Blaue Reiter artists. Other highlights include: The Residenz, - one of Europe’s most impressive palaces with a magnificent Renaissance hall and Nymphenburg Palace, with its eponymous porcelain.
