Corfu

City

Overview

At the gateway to the Adriatic, Corfu is not only a beautiful holiday destination, but it has also long been one of the most strategically important of the Greek islands. Separated from Albania by as little as 2 miles, it is a mountainous island, ringed by golden sandy beaches and dotted with fortified towns, vineyards and olive groves. The island has much historic architecture, from the temples of ancient Palaiopolis, to mediaeval castles and forts, and the Venetian Old Town which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site – as well as the Achilleion Palace built by Empress Sisi of Austria.
