Located in County Tipperary, in the heart of Ireland, Cashel is a small town noted for the iconic Rock of Cashel – an impressive cluster of mediaeval buildings set on a dramatic outcrop of limestone overlooking the Golden Vale. Highlights here include the only surviving Romanesque frescoes in Ireland. Other nearby attractions include Cahir, one or Ireland’s largest and best-preserved castles, Holycross Abbey, and the Swiss Cottage.
It is possible to make day trips by car to Cork, Kilkenny, Waterford and Limerick – all around 1 hour's drive away. Alternatively, its’ location halfway between Dublin (2 hrs drive) and the West Coast makes it an ideal stopover as part of a larger itinerary.
