A provincial capital for many centuries, Ragusa is the archetypal Sicilian hill town. Having been all but destroyed by an earthquake in 1693, the town was rebuilt in epic Baroque style, with stunning 18th century churches designed by Rosario Gagliardi, glorifying the cobbled streets of Ragusa Ibla, the oldest part of town. The towns of Piazza Armerina, Modica and Noto, restored to the tourist map by the Inspector Montalbano stories, are close, as is the 14th century Donnafugata Castle and several unspoilt sandy beaches. Fly to Catania or Comiso, our prices include car hire – private transfers can be provided if preferred.
