Tromsø has long been seen as a 'Gateway to the Arctic' and was a centre for some of the greatest Polar explorers such as Amundsen and Fridhof Nansen. Today, the city is a lively destination for visitors embarking on their own Polar adventures, whether dog-sledding or snowmobiling in the countryside, embarking on a voyage further up the coast by sea, or hunting for the Northern Lights. The history of the town is displayed in the Polar Museum, whilst the modern side of the Scandinavian culture is visible in the stark design of the Arctic Cathedral and the summer concerts and festivals.
