Coimbra
Strategically located in the centre of the country, Coimbra is an excellent place to break the journey if you are travelling from Lisbon to Oporto. The oldest seat of learning in the country, Coimbra University dates back to 1290; the cathedral too, with its wonderful examples of Manueline architecture, is the oldest in Portugal. The pedestrianised area has been restored and is once again the vibrant heart of the city.
