Overview

Eighty miles to the west of Madrid and a little over an hour by train, Avila is the country’s highest provincial capital and is dominated by its extraordinary city walls. They were built in the 12th century and extend for 2,500 metres around the old town and are punctuated by 90 fortified stone towers.
